How to avoid back pain this Fall

back pain Owen Sound

Fall is here, which means kids are back to school, winter sports are starting, and the leaves are changing. But just as the leaves change this fall, so do our activities and household chores. Whether it be picking apples, lifting pumpkins or raking the leaves in your yard – it is important to be mindful of your back during the excitement and hard work.

You might not think about your back before starting an activity, putting you at greater risk for developing pain and discomfort. But don’t you worry, we have you covered! We’ve listed some helpful tips to keep you healthy and active this season.

Tip #1

Make sure to warm-up before you begin. Injuries often happen at the start of an activity due to just jumping in and not getting an appropriate warm-up in. Your warm-up does not need to be long or intense, some gentle stretches and a short walk will do the trick.

Tip #2

Take frequent breaks. Just as injuries often happen at the beginning of an activity, they also occur most towards the end of an activity. This is because as we work our muscles fatigue and we become more reliant on our joints and ligaments, which makes us more prone to injury. Remember to take frequent breaks to allow your muscles to recover.

Tip #3

Dress in layers. Cold muscles are more susceptible to injury and being to warm can lead to dehydration and muscle cramping.

Tip #4

Tip #5

Watch your posture while raking and lifting. Try to stay as upright as possible, and to always bend at the hips and knees.

Tip #6

Use the proper equipment. Make sure your tools fit not only the job, but your body type as well.

Fall is one of the most beautiful and fun times of the year. Don’t let back pain get in your way of enjoying this wonderful time.
